Growing up in public housing with a single mother was an experience that I would not trade for the world. My mom, Jennifer Burton, was a pillar in our community. She made sure that tenants had a voice by serving as the tenant council president. Very similar to what you may call the Home Owners Association President. Except the government owned our home. She made sure there were activities for people of all ages that kept everyone busy and informed. She showed me how to take pride in my community.

Suddenly the time had come for me to leave my community. I was going to college. In the year 2000, I was one of a few other residents from that same community who was awarded with a scholarship to college. Those funds were enough to cover books, meals and other educational fees. While I received other scholarships for college, I appreciated that one the most. It made me feel like my community believed in me.  When I graduated from college, I went back to my community to talk to new recipients of that very same scholarship I’d received four years prior.

Since then, I have felt a compelling drive to give back the same way my community gave back to me. That’s what the Burton Bouie Foundation is all about: Providing a scholarship to help you in your college career. I hope to help you just like someone helped me.

All the best,

Kersa Potts (Bouie)

Why go to an HBCU?

  • Quinn, Howard University Alumna

“I chose to attend an HBCU because although I was leaving home, I wanted to be somewhere that still felt like home and would push me academically.”

  • Brandon, Hampton University Alumn

“A family member I’ve always admired would sit me down every Thanksgiving in high school and pitch me on the benefits of attending an HBCU. I took this advice to heart as she is one of the smartest, successful, and well round individuals I know. Choosing a HBCU is one of my best life decisions.”

  • Mia, CAU Alumna

“I chose my HBCU because I admired the rich legacy and wanted that “A Different World” experience that I dreamed of as a kid. Clark Atlanta University truly taught me to find a way or make one, a motto that’s helped me to become successful in life!”
